Brent’s love of music and the spirit of the festival is reflected in the three prize categories: Developing U.S. Act, Developing Non-U.S. Act, and Career Act.

The Developing Act Prizes are for artists who are breaking new ground with their creativity and show the most promise in achieving their career goals. The Career Act Prize is for an established artist who appeared at SXSW to reinvent themselves or launch a new project.

Past winners include Balming Tiger, Leon Bridges, Haim, Chvrches, Courtney Barnett, Jade Bird, Anderson .Paak, Jain, Dolly Parton, Iggy Pop, Damon Albarn, Spoon, The Chills, and The Flaming Lips.

2024 Grulke Prize Winners

Developing U.S. Act - Estevie

Sarah Silva, aka Estevie, a proud first-generation Mexican American, spearheads the revival of old Latin sounds in pop. She fuses traditional Latin styles with modern pop, creating an addictive and uniquely evocative sound. Influenced by cumbia sonidera, Estevie artfully blends pop with cartoonish rhythmic layers, Norteno, and Reggaeton notes, creating a unique sound that resonates with both Latin and broader audiences.

Developing Non-U.S. Act - TENGGER

This traveling musical family made up of Pan-Asian couple Itta (from South Korea) and Marqido (from Japan), create their brand of Krautrock-inspired psychedelic New-Age drone magic through the use of voice, harmonium, toy instruments, synths and electronics. The duo originally performed under the moniker “10”, recently re-naming themselves TENGGER (meaning ‘unlimited expanse of sky’ in Mongolian) to mark a new sonic approach and the inclusion of their (now 11-year old) son Raai into the group.

Career Act - Zapp

Since Zapp’s beginnings, its heartbeat has been a joyful family affair, unleashing the vibrant imagination of the three Troutman Brothers – Larry, Roger and Lester. Vibrating with moog bass, electrifying guitar riffs and fresh, clever lyrics, the tight-knit group’s songs demonstrate a wicked sense of humor and an unmatched ability to tell colorful stories. Now led by bandleader Lester Troutman Sr., the band carries on the legacy of a tight-knit group of expert players alongside funk and soul pioneers.

Jurors for the Grulke Prize include music critics, industry professionals, and SXSW staff, many of whom knew and worked with Brent over the years.

SXSW registrants gathered for the 25th Annual SXSW Innovation Awards presented by “Patient Safety Technology Challenge.” Host SaulPaul got things amped up as he announced winners in the 11 categories along with Best in Show and People’s Choice as determined by a jury of expert judges and festival goers.

Among the Innovation Awards winners were the five honorees of the 2024 SXSW Community Service Award who inspired attendees with their stories of how they have implemented grass-roots organization and activism with the specific communities that they serve.

Additionally, Margrethe Vestager was inducted into the SXSW Hall of Fame as part of this March 11 event.

The Artificial Intelligence category showcases projects that leverage the groundbreaking power of machine learning, LLMs and generative AI.

SXSW always seeks to showcase the most forward-thinking new ideas and today's announcement of the 2024 SXSW Innovation Awards finalists perfectly highlights that goal. This year's group of 50+ finalists provide a glimpse of the future across 11 different categories ranging from Artificial Intelligence to Health & Biotech and Community Empowerment.

"One of the judges told me that he got goosebumps when he reviewed many of the entries for this year's Innovation Awards. I agree with this sentiment,” said Hugh Forrest, SXSW Co-President and Chief Programming Officer. “There is so much here that makes me so excited about the future.”

Category winners, plus additional honors, will be revealed at the 25th annual SXSW Innovation Awards Ceremony on the evening of Monday, March 11, hosted by 3x Grammy nominee SaulPaul. Finalists were chosen by a jury of industry judges from the hundreds of entries received by SXSW in the fall of 2023.

In advance of the ceremony, these 50+ digital projects will be available for SXSW attendees to interact with at the Innovation Awards Finalist Showcase.The Showcase will take place on Saturday, March 9 from 2pm-5pm in Griffin Hall at the JW Marriott Downtown Austin. The Finalist Showcase offers SXSW registrants an up close look at the most exciting and impactful tech developments from a diverse set of companies from around the globe. Attendees also get the chance to place their vote for the People’s Choice Award.

The 2024 SXSW Hall of Fame inductee Margrethe Vesteger and the Community Service Awards recipients will also be honored during the SXSW Innovation Awards Ceremony. A SXSW Badge is required to attend both the Finalist Showcase and Awards Ceremony.
